Croissants are a classic French pastry that have become popular all over the world. These buttery, flaky treats are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even as a snack. While they may seem intimidating to make, with the right technique and a little practice, you can create perfect croissants at home. In this blog post, we’ll show you how.

Step 1: Prepare the Dough
To make croissants, you’ll need to start by preparing the dough. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. Mix well and set aside. In a separate bowl, combine warm water and milk. Add this mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
Next, transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 10-15 minutes. The dough should be smooth and elastic. Once you’ve finished kneading, shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rest for 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Step 2: Prepare the Butter
While the dough is resting, you can prepare the butter. You’ll need to use unsalted butter that is at room temperature. Place the butter between two sheets of parchment paper and use a rolling pin to flatten it into a rectangle. It should be about 1/2 inch thick. Once you’ve flattened the butter, place it in the refrigerator to chill.
Step 3: Roll and Fold the Dough
After the dough has rested and the butter has chilled, it’s time to roll and fold the dough. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a rectangle that is about 1/4 inch thick. Place the chilled butter in the center of the rectangle and fold the dough over it, like a book. Pinch the edges of the dough to seal in the butter.
Next, turn the dough so that the folded edge is facing you. Roll the dough out again into a rectangle that is about 1/4 inch thick. Fold the dough into thirds, like a letter. This is called a “turn.” Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Repeat this process two more times, chilling the dough for 30 minutes between each turn. After the third turn, chill the dough for at least an hour before shaping it into croissants.
Step 4: Shape the Croissants
To shape the croissants, roll the dough out into a large rectangle that is about 1/8 inch thick. Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to cut the dough into triangles. Roll each triangle up tightly, starting at the wide end and rolling towards the tip. Curve the ends of the croissants slightly to create the classic crescent shape.
Step 5: Bake the Croissants
Preheat your oven to 400°F. Place the shaped croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops of the croissants with an egg wash (made by beating an egg with a little bit of water). Bake the croissants for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
Once the croissants are done baking, remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your delicious homemade croissants with a cup of coffee or tea.
